9 Easy Steps for Healthier Skin

Bad skin is the bane of every modern woman’s existence. The growing popularity of social media (Instagram, Facebook, etc.), selfie phenomena and HD technology has made it imperative to always put your best foot forward in all aspects of beauty. Whether it’s hair, makeup, clothes, weight or skin, we all want to be on top form for the ever important ‘like’ or if you’re like me ‘daily selfie’.
As a makeup artist I always tell people the best foundation is great skin. The evolution of makeup has made it easier for all of us to cover up problematic skin especially in pictures by using products like color correctors, concealer & foundation. What happens when the cameras are gone? Don’t you want to feel just as confident talking to someone face to face as you do when you post an awesome picture?
Here are a few easy steps you can take to improve your skin:
– Drink lots of water: Drinking water to improve your skin is one of the cheapest, easiest and simplest steps you can take. Drinking lots of water provides much need hydration for your skin. This helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and minimize your pores.
-Change your pillowcase regularly: This is important because our pillowcases soak up a lot of oil when we go to sleep at night. Oil from your hair and excess oil secreted from your face when you are asleep. Changing your pillowcase regularly will prevent all that oil and dirt from clogging up pores and leading to acne.
-Get a facial moisturizer: Never use your body moisturizer on your face! The skin on your body is naturally thicker than the skin on your face, so body moisturizers are often times oilier and overtly perfumed and that is not good for your face. Invest in a good facial moisturizer that will help seal in moisture without clogging your pores.
-Know your skin type: Understanding your skin type will help you come up with an effective skin care regimen. Knowing if you have oily, dry or combination skin will guide you on what products to use on your skin – oil free for oily skin, moisturizing for dry skin, e.t.c
-Have a skin care regimen: Cleanse tone & moisturise. Having a good skin care regimen with the right products will greatly improve the appearance of your skin. Cleansing will clean your pores and remove excess oils; toning will reduce the appearance of dark spots and even out your skin tone; a moisturizer will seal moisture into your skin and replace nutrients lost. Remember to follow your skin regimen day and night. (Tip: pressing a hot/warm towel to your face before cleansing will open up your pores for a deeper cleansing and rinsing with lukewarm/cool water will help minimize your pores).
-Scrub that dead skin away: Using a good facial scrub at least once a week will improve the appearance of your skin by getting rid of dull dead skin and reveal brighter healthier skin. Using a facial scrub also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
-Always remove your makeup before you sleep: Always remove your make up with face wipes or a good make up remover before you go to bed, or else you will risk clogging up your pores and developing acne. Also always cleanse tone and moisturise after removing your makeup.
– SPF is your friend: Use moisturizers and make up that contain SPF to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Prolonged exposure to the sun ages skin and increases your chances of developing wrinkles, facial moles and aging.
-A different towel for your face and body: Use a different towel for your face and a different one for your body. Body soaps tend to be heavily oiled and perfumed. Our body towels tend to soak up a lot of these oils and perfumes after every bath and putting this on your face could lead to clogged pores.
