10 Things You Should Do In Your 30s Without Regret

The thirties (30s) is a phase after the quarter life and before the mid life. These are critical life stages that every individual experience as we navigate through life, self-awareness and societal roles, if not handled properly will lead to identity crisis, loss of self-confidence and despair in life. The 30s happens to be a phase of life that majority do not look forward to, reason being that, it comes with a lot of personal, family and societal expectations. In your 30s, you are expected to have graduated from college, settled on a lucrative job or career, married and with kids (the ladies can relate well to the last two) but this is not so in reality. Truth is, my journey to self-discovery started when i turned 30.
One thing i can tell you for sure is this; “your 30s are the best years of your life, a prime age and one to be embraced with so much enthusiasm and self-discoveries” If you are already in your 30s or approaching this amazing decade of your life, you can bank on these life nuggets with no regrets in your midlife:
purpose1Discover Your Life Purpose
Are you in your 30s and feeling unmotivated, unsure of yourself or lacking direction in life? You are not alone, most people are still unsure of themselves and the reason they are placed on this earth by God. Our experiences in life, our deepest values, environment, some life-changing events and relationship with God helps define our purpose. Discovering purpose is more like a journey, of which i am still a passenger and would like you to join the train for, it is the key to true happiness. My journey kicked off with a self-evaluation exercise at my former job (actually my first 2 months work experience), our then boss with his guidance and instruction, asked us to write down our purpose in life.
I started writing, I began by listing all the things that are most important to me (my life, my family and the world). I wrote down all the things I wanted to do and my gifts. I decided that whatever venture I commit to must align with my purpose, my values and my gifts. For every new opportunity that comes along, I would ask myself how it aligns with my purpose. Regardless of how much money i could acquire, if the venture is not in line with my purpose or where i envisioned to be, then I would not pursue it. Below is a summary of who I am:
My Purpose
To Energize and Empower people to live meaningful, productive lives and ultimately bring them close to the Father’s heart.
My Values
I summarized them with an acronym; G*I*F*T*S
1) Godliness (I strive to be Holy just like my Heavenly Father, with my ultimate goal of spending eternity with HIM)
2) Integrity (I am true with my feelings and character even in my relationships with people and expect same from everyone)
3) Family (I love my family and would do everything in my ability to make them smile. I desire to share a loving and intimate relationship with my spouse and children)
4) Tenacity (I am strong-willed and determined in any cause i pursue unless it violates my personal values and goals)
5) Security (I am passionate about wealth creation, being financially independent and helping people to become so)
Just like me, you can pick up your pen and paper today and begin this journey to discovering your life purpose but first, you will need to ask yourself some of these questions:
Who am i? What am i passionate about? Why am i passionate about it? What are my deepest values? What are some challenges or difficulties I’ve overcome? How would i help another overcome? Given my talents, passions and values, how would I use these resources to serve, to help, to contribute? What do i want to be remembered for at the end of my life? Am i doing any of those things right NOW?
Your life purpose is the reason you were created and what you are called to do on this earth. Discover it and Fulfill it.
Innovate or Die
Not trying to be too harsh here but my understanding is that God has put in every one of us, the ability to innovate and re-create. Isn’t that the whole essence of God’s creation of man and His command to them/us according to scriptures?
God blessed them:
“Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge!
Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air,
for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth. – Genesis 1: 28
You can translate yours to mean pro-creation and you have not in anyway differed. In fulfilling your God-given purpose, you will have to identify a need, create a unique product or service that will fulfill that need, identify your target audience and ultimately have a mindset of continuity and/or sustainability. This summarizes the principle of brand creation. What are you creating TODAY?
Create an Investment Plan
This is the right time to make wise investment, keeping in mind the future of your family and those that you are responsible for. The best investment you can make in your 30s could be going for further studies, improving on a particular skill or interest, owning properties, buying a house or setting up an investment trust fund. Whatever it may be, make sure you set specific and realistic goals, calculate how much you may need to save each month, short or long term goal, and follow it through. Above all, ensure it’s a value you can look forward to in your retirement when the time comes. .
Nurture Friendship
We are social beings and should cultivate the right kind of friendship at this stage of our life. You do not need loads of them but a few friends who appreciates you, inspires you and brings out the best in you. Friends that see you as an asset, not a liability and will go to any length to help you actualize your God-given purpose in life.
its-time-to-inspireInspire Others or Give Back
Don’t get lost in having fun, building your career or raising your family, so much that you tend to ignore to lend a helping hand to those in need. Commit to a social cause that you are passionate about or become a volunteer with organizations or foundations that work for a cause (educating the poor or underprivileged, mentoring programs, capacity building, etc) You will never ever regret being there for someone who needed it the most. In my early years of blogging, i wrote about giving gifts that gives back.
Appreciate Your Family
Often people think that this resolution belongs to married people. Wrong! Connect with your parent, spend more time with them while they are still young enough to actively enjoy it so that you will not regret when they are no more. Keep in touch with your siblings and support one another because they are your pillars of support in troubled times. Communicate with your beloved aunt or uncle. And finally off course, for the married ones, give time to your spouse and children. Create activities and events around family time. Children grow quickly and leave home sooner than you know, your spouse will remain your closest and the most important person in your life at that time. Do not focus on things and achievements as against family and wellness. The former are fleeting, the latter are a sound investment, that pay you back the rest of your life.
Travel The World
“I haven’t been everywhere but it’s on my list” – Susan Sontag
Yes! It’s also on my list. Travelling opens your eyes, widens your perception about life, helps create meaningful relationships, opens up loads of opportunities and also a very important tool in networking. By the time you are 40 and above, you would’ve seen so much and gathered enough experience to last a lifetime. Do not wait until you are frail and feeble to travel the world. I have communicated my Travel Buckets List for this year and tips for a successful vacation, I plan to include travelling into each year’s goals so why don’t you pack your bag and let’s hit the road NOW!

I am still working on this goal, in fact i am creating a library in my home at the moment. I need a constant reminder to keep to this goal. Heard about the Blinkist, a personal reading assistant? Check it out and sign up. It’s a 1,000+ best-selling nonfiction books, transformed into powerful packs you can read in just 15 minutes to help kick-start your reading culture. Thank me later!
“For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die.”

inspirational-quote-bodyTake care of your body
If there is anything you would regret after you have lost the youthfulness and juiciness of your 30s, it’s not taking care of your body. If you are still eating those junkies and living an anti-exercise lifestyle, trust me you are in for a weakly midlife. This is the best time to treat your body like you got no other, eat healthy! I mean, eat to live with plenty of veggies, fruits and water. Not sounding too cliche but this lifestyle will have you looking younger and healthier in your midlife. Sleep! Sleep!! Sleep!!! And you want to make fitness a lifestyle, loose weight and get your skin toned? Yes, you can! It’s sweat, it’s fun, it’s healthy! Your body will thank you later.

OR NOBODY WILL… This is the best tool to staying happy. It begins with knowing thyself, what makes you happy and a commitment to love and accept yourself. Unknown to you, this decision affects the quality of your relationships, your work, your free time, vocation, faith and your future. It is all in your hands!
To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh
